Online Poker = A True Gamble

Raise your hand if you have seen stranger than usual things playing poker online?? My stint in the online poker realm only lasted a few months but I saw the damnedest things during that few months.

Essentially these things caused me to rethink my online poker adventures which ended in me quitting my play online all together. Wrap your head around this for a while and you will see what essentially scared the bejesus and my money out of the online poker world.

1. There is no regulation so essentially you are trusting God knows who somewhere offshore.

2. PokerProf and I discussed once about how the online poker rooms could inject a bot every so often into play without anyone knowing about it, playing a canned hand where the "bot" would extract the most money with some sort of bad beat hand (and this is simply a worse case scenario). Do this every hour or so on 25 to 50 tables extracting anywhere from $5 to $50 a pop and you are talking anywhere from $125 to $2500 an hour extra in their pockets above and beyond the rake and no one is the wiser for it. You might ask why would they do this?? They are already making a gob of dinero?? My question is why wouldn't they do this?? It is like taking candy from a baby and there is no one to catch'em doing it. You think it is someone in Iowa drinking a Pabst passing some time when it is really a finely tuned piece of software that already knows what the hand is going to be and the way it is going to act depending upon your reaction to it. Plus the kicker is that the "bot" will never lose... I guarantee you this is going on in a number of different online poker rooms because it is simply too big a cash cow to ignore.

3. The rakes are hell!

4. The online poker rooms talk about shutting colluding players down but they really don't care. I saw it time and time again.

5. And last but not least, it just isn't as fun as real poker. I say this because online poker isn't REAL poker!!!

This wasn't an attempt to dissect the online poker phenomenon itself but merely a "whining" about why online poker SUCKS!!!

Just remember that you are really rolling the dice when you decide to log on and push your chips to the middle!!

  • Hear hear! You know my thoughts on a lot of this already :) I just read an interesting article from MSN that; although it does not go as far as I would like, takes up the issue of bots. On-line poker is such a mixed bag, no doubt, I believe it is profitable for skilled players more often then not, but there are some shady aspects that can only be overcome (in my opinion) though legalization and regulation, just as the B&M casinos are subject too.

  • Right Prof... To me there is just too much unknown involved right now with online poker. I wish there was some way to legitimize it because if I felt comfortable I would play a bit to fill the dry spots between live action...
